Mumbai: A significant development has emerged in the preparations for the upcoming general elections of the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), as the State Government/Authorized Officer, with the approval of the Maharashtra State Election Commission, has issued the official Notification for the Final Delimitation (formation) of Wards.

Legal Basis and Number of Councilors

This proclamation (No.: निवडणूक/सा/२९१/२०२५-२۶) has been issued under Sections 5 and 19 of The Mumbai Municipal Corporation Act, 1888. The notification confirms that the total number of Councilors to be elected for the Mumbai Municipal Corporation will remain 227, and the municipal area has also been divided into these 227 wards.

Final Decision After Considering Objections

The State Government or its Authorized Officer, with the approval of the State Election Commission, carefully reviewed all objections and suggestions received in response to the Draft Notification (No.: निवडणूक/सा/१۴۹/۲۰۲۵-२६) issued on August 22, 2025. The new boundaries and extent of the wards were finalized only after detailed consideration of all these points.

Ward Details and Population Statistics

The schedule attached to the notification includes the geographical boundaries, key locations, and population details for each ward. This document clarifies how the wards have been constituted. For instance, according to the information in the schedule, the total population of Ward No. 1 is 49,940, while the total population of Ward No. 227 has been fixed at 60,695, which includes a Scheduled Caste (SC) population of 2,656 and a Scheduled Tribe (ST) population of 228. These figures indicate an effort to maintain balance in population and area for each ward.

Date of Implementation

This final formation of wards has become immediately effective and will be utilized in the next general elections of the Municipal Corporation. This final notification paves the way for political parties and electoral candidates to finalize their strategies at the ward level.
