Vladimir Shklyarov, the renowned Russian ballet dancer, tragically passed away on Saturday after falling from the fifth floor of a building in St. Petersburg. His death was confirmed by the Mariinsky Theatre, where he had been the top dancer for many years.

The Russian authorities are investigating the incident, with initial reports suggesting that the fall may have been an accident. A source from emergency services told RIA Novosti that there was no indication of foul play.

Shklyarov was scheduled to undergo complex spinal surgery just days before his death and had been taking strong painkillers for some time, according to local media.

His colleague, Diana Vishneva, expressed deep sorrow over the loss, calling it a "tragedy" for the ballet world. She praised Shklyarov as a beloved figure, who was the favorite partner of many ballerinas.

Born in Leningrad (now St. Petersburg), Shklyarov trained at the prestigious Vaganova Academy of Russian Ballet and joined the Mariinsky Theatre in 2003. He became a principal dancer in 2011 and starred in major productions like Swan Lake, Sleeping Beauty, Romeo and Juliet, and Don Quixote. Shklyarov also performed as a guest artist with prestigious companies like London's Royal Ballet and the American Ballet Theatre.

Throughout his career, Shklyarov received numerous honors, including the Léonide Massine International Prize in 2008 and the title of Honored Artist of Russia in 2020.

Known for his outspoken stance on peace, Shklyarov publicly opposed the war in Ukraine, advocating for the well-being of people and a peaceful future.

Shklyarov leaves behind his wife, fellow dancer Maria Shirinkina, and their two children. His death marks a profound loss for the global ballet community.
