New Delhi, Ahead of the upcoming local self-government elections, a delegation from the Shiv Sena met with top officials of the Election Commission of India in New Delhi and called for linking the voter list with Aadhaar numbers to enhance transparency and integrity in the electoral process. The party also demanded a thorough verification of voter rolls to identify and eliminate names of Bangladeshi nationals.
The delegation included Maharashtra’s Industries Minister Uday Samant, Minister Shambhuraj Desai, MP Milind Deora, and former MP Rahul Shewale. They met with Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar, Commissioner Dr. Sukhbir Singh Sandhu, and Commissioner Dr. Vivek Joshi.
Minister Samant praised the Election Commission’s initiative to engage with representatives from both national and regional political parties. Under the leadership of Shiv Sena chief Eknath Shinde, the delegation conveyed the party’s views to the Commission and reiterated its support for Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s 'One Nation, One Election' proposal.
Highlighting the importance of transparency, Minister Samant discussed the feasibility of linking Aadhaar with the voter database. He especially emphasized the need for a strict review of the voter list in major urban areas like Mumbai, where, according to the party, a significant number of Bangladeshi nationals are illegally residing. Shiv Sena urged the Commission to remove such names if found on the electoral rolls.
Minister Samant also dismissed reports that the delegation's visit was in any way related to the ongoing Supreme Court hearing regarding Shiv Sena's bow and arrow symbol.
