Srinagar: A major disruption occurred in the Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Assembly on Thursday when Khurshid Ahmad Sheikh, the MLA from Langate, displayed a banner demanding the restoration of Article 370 and 35A, and the release of political prisoners.
Sheikh, who is the brother of jailed MP Engineer Rashid, stormed into the well of the House with the banner. This led to objections from BJP leaders, including the Leader of the Opposition, Sunil Sharma. Despite instructions from the Speaker to sit down, Sheikh continued to hold the banner. BJP lawmakers attempted to grab the banner, resulting in a fistfight between the members.
PDP MLA Waheed Para stepped in to help Sheikh, trying to calm the situation.
Meanwhile, opposition lawmakers, including People’s Conference leader Sajad Lone, passed a resolution condemning the government’s decision to revoke Article 370 in 2019. The resolution called the move unconstitutional and said it took away the special status and rights of the people of Jammu and Kashmir.
The Assembly session ended in chaos, with the debate over Article 370 and 35A showing no signs of resolution.
