Delhi, November 6, 2024 — The Delhi High Court has denied permission for devotees to engage in Chhath Puja celebrations along the banks of the Yamuna River in Geeta Colony, citing significant pollution concerns. Chief Justice Manmohan and Justice Tushar Rao Gedela emphasized, “It will be very harmful to you… the river is so polluted that if you immerse yourself in it, there is a likelihood of suffering health consequences.”

Santosh Kumar Tripathi, representing the Delhi government, supported the court's ruling, indicating that the pollution levels are excessively high and may pose serious health risks. The government has established 1,000 alternative sites throughout the city for the safe observance of Chhath Puja.

In spite of these preparations, numerous devotees undertook ritual baths in the river on the inaugural day of Chhath Puja, even as thick, toxic foam was visibly present on its surface. This ruling occurs amid escalating pollution levels and in the context of Delhi's upcoming assembly elections, during which the Purvanchali community, a significant demographic group within the electorate, holds substantial influence.
