Ambala, December 6, 2024: A group of 101 farmers, led by the Kisan Mazdoor Morcha (KMM) and Samyukt Kisan Morcha (non-political) (SKM-NP), was stopped by Haryana police on Friday while marching towards Delhi. The farmers were demanding a legal guarantee for the minimum support price (MSP) of their crops.
The march began at 1 pm from the Shambhu border, but after covering only a few metres, they were stopped by a barricade set up by the police. Authorities cited a prohibitory order under Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS), preventing the farmers from continuing their journey.
Despite the roadblock, a group of farmers pushed through the barricades at the Ghaggar River bridge in a show of defiance.
To control the situation, the Ambala district administration imposed a ban on gatherings of five or more people. The Haryana government also suspended mobile internet and SMS services in 11 villages of Ambala district, which will remain in place until December 9.
The farmers have been protesting for several months, camping at the Shambhu and Khanauri border points since February 13, after their earlier march to Delhi was blocked. They are demanding a legal guarantee from the government for MSP, which they say is vital for their livelihoods.
The situation remains tense, with farmers vowing to continue their protests until their demands are met.
