Mumbai, Taking serious note of the growing traffic congestion on the Satara–Kolhapur National Highway, Public Works Minister Hon. Shivendrasinhraje Bhonsale has directed the concerned departments to take immediate and effective measures to address the situation.

A detailed review meeting was held today to assess the progress of ongoing road works, the increasing congestion in the Karad area, and the surge in truck movement during the ongoing sugarcane crushing season. During the meeting, Minister Bhonsale instructed officials to implement concrete and urgent steps to reduce the traffic burden on the highway.

Currently, around eight sugar factories along the Satara–Kolhapur highway are operational, and their crushing season has already begun. Consequently, incidents such as truck overturning and accidents involving heavily loaded vehicles carrying sugarcane have become frequent, causing hours-long traffic jams at various points. In view of this, Minister Bhonsale ordered that cranes be deployed at regular intervals along the route to ensure prompt assistance in case of accidents and to maintain smooth traffic flow.

He also instructed that the pending work on service roads be completed on a priority basis to provide alternative routes for vehicular movement. The Minister further directed that contractors be ordered to immediately complete bridge construction work wherever it remains pending.

Minister Bhonsale emphasized that special attention must be given to the installation of clear directional signboards, the repair of service roads, and the improvement of lighting arrangements along the highway to ensure safe and convenient travel.

The meeting was attended by MLA Shri Manoj Ghorpade, Secretary (Public Works) Abasaheb Nagargoaje, Under Secretary Sachin Chivate, and senior officials of the Public Works Department. The District Collectors and Superintendents of Police of Satara and Kolhapur districts also participated in the meeting via video conferencing.

Minister Shivendrasinhraje Bhonsale stated:

“The administration must take action on a war footing to ensure that citizens do not face inconvenience due to traffic congestion. Our priority is to reduce public hardship by improving service roads, signboards, and safety arrangements along the highway.”
