New Delhi: Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi Vadra took oath as a Member of Parliament in the Lok Sabha on Thursday, November 28, marking her official entry into electoral politics. With her win, all three members of the Nehru-Gandhi family—Sonia Gandhi, Rahul Gandhi, and Priyanka Gandhi—are now part of Parliament.
Priyanka won the Wayanad Lok Sabha bypoll by a massive margin of 4,10,931 votes, defeating BJP’s Navya Haridas and CPI’s Sathyan Mokeri. She secured 6,22,338 votes in total, slightly fewer than her brother Rahul Gandhi’s 6,47,445 votes in the April general elections. However, her victory margin was larger than Rahul’s, making her debut even more special.
Rahul Gandhi vacated the Wayanad seat earlier this year after winning two constituencies, choosing to retain Rae Bareli, the family stronghold. This led to the bypoll, held alongside the Maharashtra and Jharkhand Assembly elections.
Priyanka arrived at Parliament with her mother Sonia Gandhi, her brother Rahul Gandhi, and her husband Robert Vadra for the oath-taking ceremony. Rahul, the Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha, described her win as a “proud moment” for the Congress.
In another Congress victory, Ravindra Vasantrao Chavan won the Nanded Lok Sabha bypoll in Maharashtra with 5,86,788 votes. This seat fell vacant after the death of sitting MP Vasantrao Balwantrao Chavan.
With Priyanka in the Lok Sabha and Sonia in the Rajya Sabha, the Nehru-Gandhi family’s presence in Parliament is stronger than ever, giving a boost to the Congress as it looks to rebuild its position in Indian politics.
