Imphal, November 16, 2024 – On Saturday, angry protesters attacked the homes of two Manipur Ministers and three MLAs in Imphal. They were demanding justice for the murder of three people in Jiribam district.

The protests started after three bodies were found near the Manipur-Assam border. The bodies, believed to be those of people who had been missing, included two children and a woman. Police suspect that Kuki insurgents kidnapped them during a fight with the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF).

The protesters went to Health Minister Sapam Ranjan’s house and shouted for action against the killers. Others gathered outside the house of BJP MLA RK Imo, who is also the son-in-law of Chief Minister N Biren Singh. They demanded that the government arrest the killers within 24 hours.

When protesters found out that independent MLA Sapam Nishikanta Singh was not in the state, they attacked his office building.

In response to the violence, the Imphal West district government has imposed a curfew and shut down internet and mobile data services in several areas, including Imphal West, East, and Bishnupur, for two days.

The violence is part of a long-running conflict between the Meitei and Kuki communities in Manipur. Many people are calling for the government to take stronger action to stop the unrest and bring peace.
