New Delhi: The Supreme Court on Tuesday took note of media reports about a speech by Allahabad High Court judge Justice Shekhar Kumar Yadav at a Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) event. The apex court has asked the High Court for details regarding the judge’s comments, which have sparked criticism.

Speaking at the VHP’s legal cell event held on the High Court premises, Justice Yadav said, “You can’t disrespect a woman who is recognized as a goddess in our Shastras and Vedas. You can’t claim the right to have four wives, perform halala, or practice triple talaq.” He also supported the Uniform Civil Code (UCC), stating, “Having different Constitutions for different communities is dangerous for the nation.”

His comments have drawn sharp criticism, with some calling them communal and discriminatory. An NGO, Citizens for Judicial Accountability and Reforms, wrote to Chief Justice of India Sanjiv Khanna, requesting an inquiry into Justice Yadav’s conduct. The letter accused him of breaching his oath as a judge and violating judicial guidelines.

AIMIM chief and MP Asaduddin Owaisi also criticized the judge. He announced on X (formerly Twitter) that he had signed a notice to initiate removal proceedings against Justice Yadav. “This behavior goes against constitutional norms and judicial values,” Owaisi said.

The Supreme Court’s response highlights the importance of impartiality and accountability in the judiciary. Many are now watching closely to see what action, if any, will follow.
