Nagpur (MimTimes) Following increasing complaints of irregularities and corruption in Mumbai’s Dattak Vasti Yojana, the Maharashtra government on Monday announced in the Legislative Assembly that an audit of the scheme will be conducted. The matter was raised during the discussion by BJP Mumbai President and MLA Amit Satam. Responding to the issue, Minister of State for Urban Development Madhuri Misal informed the House that a thorough audit of the scheme will take place.

Speaking in the Assembly, MLA Amit Satam said that the Dattak Vasti Yojana plays a crucial role in collecting garbage from slum areas and transporting it to the dumping grounds. He pointed out that garbage heaps are visible on several roads because waste from slums is first collected at a single point before being picked up by the BMC. However, the scheme’s requirement of 150 families or a population of 750 is not being followed. Satam alleged that although 15 workers are mandatory under the rules, most NGOs appoint only 5 to 10 workers, and the wages of the remaining workers are misused.

Satam further stated that garbage must be collected twice a day from slum areas since there is no space to store it inside the huts. “But in reality, this is not happening. As a result, there are large-scale irregularities and corruption in the Dattak Vasti Yojana. Officials from the BMC’s Solid Waste Management Department are also involved in this scam,” he alleged.

He also suggested that the criteria of the scheme should be changed if required. The population benchmark should be reduced from 750 to 500, and the wages of workers should be increased. However, adequate manpower must be deployed in the concerned areas, MLA Satam added.
