Renowned Urdu journalist, writer, editor, and founder of the children’s monthly magazine “Gul Bootay,” Farooq Syed, passed away on the evening of May 19, 2026, at around 7 PM. His demise has cast a deep shadow of grief over Mumbai’s literary, cultural, and journalistic communities, as well as Urdu circles across Maharashtra.

Farooq Syed was regarded as a respected and influential voice in Urdu journalism. Throughout his long career, he remained committed to honest reporting, social awareness, and the promotion of Urdu language and literature. His writings reflected the realities of common people, especially the struggles of marginalized and underprivileged communities in Mumbai.

Known for his fearless journalism and simple yet impactful writing style, he wrote extensively on civic issues, education, employment, and social concerns affecting minorities and the working class. His columns were widely appreciated for presenting complex political and social matters in a clear and reader-friendly manner.

Apart from journalism, Farooq Syed made remarkable contributions to children’s literature. His magazine “Gul Bootay” became a beloved platform for nurturing reading habits, creativity, and love for Urdu among children. Through the publication, he inspired generations of young readers and encouraged emerging writers and poets.

According to family sources, he had travelled for Umrah during the month of Ramadan earlier this year. Before returning to India, his health deteriorated, following which he was brought back to Mumbai for treatment. Despite undergoing bypass surgery and receiving medical care at multiple hospitals, he could not recover.

His funeral prayers will be offered tomorrow after Zuhr prayers, after which he will be laid to rest at Nariyalwadi Qabrastan.

Writers, journalists, social activists, and literary organizations have expressed profound sorrow over his passing, describing it as an irreparable loss for Urdu journalism and children’s literature.

May Almighty Allah grant him forgiveness, bless him with the highest place in Jannah, and give patience and strength to his family, friends, readers, and admirers.
